"Puliyodharai" is one of thr all time favorite south Indian recipes. It is often found in many temples as prasadham. Let us learn how to make a traditional tamarind rice recipe.

Ingredients for Tamarind Rice

  • Rice - 1.5 Cup
  • Tamarind - Gooseberry Size
  • Mustard Seeds - 2 tsp
  • Urad Dal- 1 tsp
  • Chana Dal - 1 tsp
  • Peanuts - 1/4 Cup
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Curry Leaves
  • Asafoetida - A Pinch
  • Dry Red chilly - 4
  • Gingely Oil
  • Salt

Ingredients for Puliyodharai Powder

  • Coriander Seeds - 4 tblsp
  • Black Pepper - 1 tsp
  • Dry Red chilly - 6
  • Chana Dal - 2 tblsp
  • Fenugreek Seeds - A Pinch

Preparation of Puliyogare Recipe

Dry roast the ingredients given under puliyodharai powder. Cool it and grind them together to make smooth powder.

Cook the rice with 3 cups water. Keep it aside.

Soak the tamarind in 1/2 cup water and extract the pulp.

Take a pan and heat2 to 3 tblsp of gingely oil.

Add mustard seeds and let it fry for 30 seconds.

Now add red chillies, curry leaves, urad dal, chana dal and asafoetida. Saute them for few seconds.

Add tamarind extract, turmeric powder, masala we powdered and salt to taste.

Cook them in low flame until the raw smell goes off.

After some time oil will starts to separate from the tamarind mixture.Add peanuts and switch of the flame.

Then add cooked rice. Stir them gently and turn off the flame. Keep it for 15 to 20 minutes.

Transfer to serving plate.

An traditional and tasty lunch box special, Puliyodharai is ready.

Tips - Puliyodharai Recipe

We can add ghee for more flavour.

We can add 1/2 tsp of jaggery for an enhanced taste.
